Studies have shown that students who write after they read, progress exponentially faster. I have students summarize just about everything that they read. This helps with their retell, comprehension, and it helps them to formulate and organize their thoughts for writing. Each Monday the students will receive this reading log. They are to summarize what they read each day from their 20 minutes of reading. They need to give the main idea, three events in order and then a wrap up of what they read. This form will be due on Friday morning.
Also, studies have shown links from cursive writing to whole brain stimulation. You can read that study here. It is also part of our 4th grade core standards. Students will receive a weekly cursive packet that they should mostly complete with their self starts done throughout the week. I ask for your help to grade them using the cursive rubric that will be sent home each week with the packet.
